Whats the Best Free Video Editing Software You're looking for the latest effects, all the bells and whistles. Fly video, images and text in or out. Try your hand with video composites, polygons, chroma keys and filters. Don't forget about those special transitions and effects. You want software that will do the things you see other video editors do. Oh yeah, and you want this pro-quality software for free. Not too unreasonable to ask. We have the technology, don't we Well. That may be true, and later on I'll give you a few links where you can find free editing software. But first let me bend your ear a little before you start sampling them. Who knows, you might discover some things to consider while looking for your free editing software. I purchased my editing software. So my interest in this isn't downloading and testing free editing programs. This just represents personal research and opinion from someone who's edited professionally for over twenty years. Keep in mind that no matter what anybody recommends, in the end you'll eventually have to try the software yourself. That's the only way you'll know if any free program is right for you. There are plenty out there. Remember that free is free, and you get what you paid for. That may sound clich, but more often times than not you'll get the idea once you start using any free editor you choose. The problems will occur in a variety of places once you start doing things you want to do. Although most editing programs work very similar, every one of them has its own way of doing things, free or not. They'll each have different procedures, terminology, operating windows, buttons, effects and filters. The list goes on and on. So remember that you'll be spending a certain amount of time just getting used to the one you choose. Do yourself a favor and research before downloading. Just about all editing software makers have a web site and some kind of forum or message board. Read what the users are saying. Have a look at the program's screenshots and visit their demo pages. See if the software is easy to use and if its features meet your expectations. Otherwise you'll find yourself going through a lot of free software wasting time learning a variety of different programs. Okay. So you have a buddy that can get you an unlicensed copy of what you want. Everyone does it, right Of course this is not recommended. There's always the chance of infection. Personal computer systems and components vary so much you may experience severe crashes. You'll get no tech support, and with today's ever-probing technology, do you really think illegal software use goes unnoticed Besides, stealing is stealing. It's not a good human character trait and disrespects those who spent time creating the software, not to mention those who legally purchased theirs. You really expect to receive any help from them Then there are web sites where you can edit videos online for free. You either have to download the user software or become a member. Don't expect much, and learn to live with a pop up for the company at the beginning, end or during of your video. A few online editing web sites have some neat features but that's about it. Most online edit sites are extremely limited, only offering one video and audio track. You might get a few effects. Good points are that some online editing sites offer free media resources like video and audio clips you can use firewall software. In general the only requirement these sites have is that you don't use your videos for commercial use. Another thing that makes these sites attractive for mobile users is they accept just about any video or audio format you can think of, even apps. So if you can't buy software and just need simple edits, free online editing sites may fit the bill. If you can afford it, my recommendation is to purchase your own editing software. You don't have to spend thousands and can probably find something within your budget. You might even find something to get started with for under a hundred. Because in the end, most affordable retail editing software packages have enough features and effects to fulfill a beginner's expectations. The program may not do everything you want it to do or may be more difficult to operate, but should have enough to keep you busy. You won't need much in the beginning. You'll be spending most of your time learning how to use the darn thing. As with free software, research a few affordable retail programs for comparison. Learn about their use, their features and don't forget to read user comments. Just always keep in mind that editing is more than special effects and transitions. The creativity of editing is also in the timing, image composition, relevance, writing, audio mix and many other creative elements combined to share a multimedia statement or perspective with others. You can do that with cuts and dissolves. Searching the web I found the following sites offering free video editing software or services. As was stated before, none of the software was downloaded or tested. I did view or try online demos when available. ONLINE EDITING So let's start with web sites where you can edit online. In general don't expect much from these sites, usually one video and audio track with a few effects. To be honest there's not much difference between these online editors in terms of capabilities. You get more with Movie Maker. Free for members, which you probably already are. Easy software to use but extremely limited. Like most free online editors, good enough if you're only looking to make very simple videos. You must register to use the software. Easy program but has limited features. Free for personal use only. The site also offers other fee-based services for businesses. Many of the free downloadable editing software you'll find are time-limited or crippled demo/trial versions. If you look around you'll find editing software that is truly free. The ones below are either independent projects or can be found at the SourceForge offers a wide variety of computer software contributed from around the world. All software carries an license and are free to use. Many of the editors below don't offer much more than online editors do or even what you get with Windows for free, but there are a couple of gems on this list that may surprise you. (formerly Zwei-Stein) The original version of Zwei-Stein has been around for some time. I tried an old version years ago but could never get the hang of it. This new revision appears to be much improved and very powerful. Polygon effects, chroma key, unlimited a/v tracks, multiple formats and it runs on a variety of computer systems. Certain tasks can get complicated. It'll take some time getting used to its work environment and procedures, but if you can get the hang of it, a lot can be done with ZS4. A comprehensive free program with many surprising advanced features including multiple video and audio tracks. Open Source with plenty of user-contributed add-ons to further enhance the software's capabilities. The timeline system is similar to other high-end editing software and seems easy to use. It does have its limitations, but is packed with enough features to please most aspiring editors. Whatever editing software you choose just remember that sometimes creativeness is discovered by lacking the most desired tools. Editing actually is a simple process, even if you have thousand dollar software. In the end you are simply combining different media elements to create a finished product you hope others will enjoy. How you put a complete video project together is where you'll find your own personal creative expression, whatever software you're using. As always, good luck and have fun creating! How to Find the Right Network Support Company There are many things in a business that you can outsource. This might include your accounting department, your tech support, and even your networking service. If you wish to outsource your networking department for any reason, it would be a good idea for you to find a company that is able to support your needs both now and in the future. Finding the right network support company is not going to be easy by any means because you need to find somebody that not only possesses the right certifications, you also need to find one that has the knowledge. Believe it or not, these two things are not always interchangeable. You might find a company that has every certification under the sun, but their technicians cannot tell a category five cable from a palm pilot - not good. There are a number of skills that a network support company needs to possess. One particular skill that might be needed is the ability to expand a network if necessary. network security At some point you might need to install a network hub, or you might even need to cut cables to install new connectors. If this is the case, the company needs to be able to differentiate between the various colours. In addition to that, if new installations need to be done, the network support company needs to be able to install different cable colours. This will help you to determine where the cables are going, and what their function is. As you can imagine, this is an oversight that many network support companies will make. Once the installation is over with, the network support company will need to be able to actually RUN the network. Running the network could mean ensuring that it runs smoothly, or it could mean answering questions from users within the business. Making sure firewalls are intact, and making sure that all of the hardware and software is up to date is a very important part of the entire process. This is not always easy firewall hardware. Your network support company needs to be Cisco certified, it needs to meet your requirements, and it needs to know when it is time to upgrade certain network parts. There comes a time when everything needs replaced, and you might have a network support team that can deal with legacy parts. If they are dealing with a legacy network, you need to be very careful, because the last thing you want it your support company to leave you with an outdated network that you really cannot do anything with. There are many things to think about and consider when it comes to a network support company. They need to be smart, they need to be on top of things, and they need to know what to do when something goes wrong. Remember that your network represents the backbone of your entire company. It needs to be up and running at all times, and if your network support company cannot seem to handle this, then it is without a doubt time to find a different company. Movie Review The Social Network "The Social Network" is the story of a Harvard student named Mark , who becomes the world's youngest billionaire by creating Facebook network security. If you need me to tell you what Facebook is, you're even more of a luddite than I am. The story is told in a series of flashbacks, with the current action taking place during legal depositions. You see, Mark is being sued by a pair of spurned preppy twins, as well as his former CFO (and former best friend) Eduardo. Their testimony, along with Zuckerberg's, provides a well-rounded view (not just one person's perspective) of how the biggest, most famous social network in the history of the universe came to be. This technique is quite effective, as the action unfolds in reverse chronological order. Basically, what we now know as Facebook was not hatched fully formed. Not at all. It morphed. It isan flash-of-geniusconcept fueled by a series of eventsand many"happy accidents." Quite a few people contributed, directly and indirectly, to its formulation. So why, you may ask, does end up in a law firm conference room being pounded and probed mercilessly Who are these crew-rowing Winklevoss twins, and why are they accusing him of intellectual property theft How in the heck did Eduardo, who figures prominently in all phases of the story, end up sueing his friend and business partner Along the way, we get an up close and extremely personal view of how revenge -- in the right hands -- can lead to enterpreneurial brilliance. But, as the movie trailer reminds us: Having spent many college and post-college days cavorting in Harvard Square , for me the biggest star of this film is the scenery. I drank up the scenes of Harvard University -- Harvard Yard, Harvard dorms and Harvard culture -- like a kitten laps up milk (or a plebe laps up beer). The rowing scenes on the also brought back many a happy memory. The film definitely pokes a finger (and none too gently) at old money classism and Ivy League snootiness. Zuckerberg proves you don't have to be fourth generation Harvard, or a member of any of the "final" clubs, to make a global name for yourself. I should say the Winklevoss twins are not bad guys, really. But their maroon blazers with white-piped lapels, worn for a crew match in England, make it pretty hard to root for them over Mark and his nerdy, motley crew. In fact, one of the funniest scenes in the movie is when the outraged twins request an audience with the president of Harvard. Let's just say the meeting doesn't go their way. I also marveled at Mark's reaction to fame and the ensuing lawsuits. He's pretty deadpan throughout.not to mention irreverent. He's always a half-step off from those around him. He's arrogant, but not in a cocky, flamboyant way; more in a "you just don't get it and I do" kind of way. Whatever influence Napster founder (Justin Timberlake -- perfectly cast!) supposedly has on Mark, it's clear that Mark makes his own decisions. Facebook is Mark's show. He does what seems logical and rational to him at the time. Moving his operation from Cambridge, MA to Palo Alto, CA makes perfect business sense. Anyone who doesn't like it can lump it. For some ridiculous reason I expected to be the same sweet, goofy, unassuming guy he was in "Juno." But Jesse Eisenberg wasn't in "Juno" -- although he was young and impressionable in "The Squid and the Whale" and absolutely adorable in "Adventureland." Not so much in this film, however. Regardless of my preconceptions of the leading man, I guess I was unprepared for the harsh reality of Mark Zuckerberg. I mean, the guy's a prick. Well, maybe not so much anymore, since he does give a lot of money to charity. But in this film, he's not a nice person. I think the irony of him starting a "social" networking siteis how socially inept he is. But hey -- Zuckerberg's a billionaire and I'm not. Nice guys finish last, as they say. I think what bothered me most was how Mark treated his best friend/business partner . Eduardo is the epitome of loyalty. He's right there beside Mark from day one. It's Eduardo who provides the algorithm to "mash" the facebook photos of various Harvard dorms, enabling side-by-side rating of female students. It's Eduardo who provides the funding to get "The Facebook" off the ground. Eduardo's the money guy. He's the CFO of the business. And he does not deserve how Mark (and his California guru Sean Parker) diss him. I don't harbor any illusions that undergraduate males put undergraduate females on pedestals. They are fueled by hormones and alcohol (in various forms). And so are the girls. Getting high and hooking up are mainstay college activities. I know that. The lone exception to the women-as-status-seeking sexpots stereotype is Erica Albright. Erica is in the first scene of the movie. The words she says to Mark Zuckberg in the beginning hold equally true all the way to the end: "You are going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. But that's not true. It will really be because you're an asshole." Those with a strong stomach for business back-stabbing will not be phased by this movie (I rate it "M" for "meanness"). Those fascinated by rapidly evoloving technology will love this movie. Those who like tosee creative ideas take shape and go commercial and make gazillions of dollars will thrill at this movie. Me My first words to hubby after the closing credits, were, "Yuck. Kinda makes me want to close my Facebook account." He replied, "I know. I was thinking the same thing."
